GRAB HOLD OF TRUTH

Text: “Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.”  Proverbs 23:23

The present age is an era in which truth has suffered the onslaught of evil and reduced to a state nearly impossible to find. No one seems to be able to discover truth. Everyone is in despair! When truth is pursued the seeker usually explores a what and a whom. See below.

Upon the first pages of the Bible we are introduced to the Prince of lies, the Devil. He exposes the first lie to subvert God’s Supreme Creature’  Man. The crafty master and and planner of man’s  undoing fashions the first untruth, wresting truth into evil’s utensil. But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. ” Genesis 3:3-4   Jesus boldly told his disciples of the Devil’s true nature. “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father‘s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44-45  Satan has given untruth so much power that man breaks beneath it and surrenders with little resistance. The educated governor Pilate mocked Jesus and the truth, ““What is truth?” retorted Pilate.” John 18:38   “A lie will go round the world while truth is pulling its boots on.”  (Mostly attributed to Mark Twain).

Our first duty to truth is not to be casual with it.  Truth is a very serious thing and we must neither neglect it nor be impertinent about it. It is not unusual  to meet people who are not really “seekers of truth”. Their shallowness directly  demonstrates, that any  little light and amusing comment will be adopted and used as truth or wisdom. This laziness to seek for truth is an egregious offense which flaunts the will of God and the needs of man! Shallow companions are unwilling to work to discover any truth for themselves, even for truth available by the easiest effort. Our times are all about “information”.  Data (information) is distributed at unbelievable speed  these days. And there is such an immense amount of information that we are overwhelmed by it. The internet has altered everything. There is so much to process. Modern  journalists, commentators,  and advertisers seem to spurn subjecting their work to any sense of principles, morality, or truthfulness. Our duty is to demand respect for truth in ourselves, our media, our government and our advertising. Our personal agenda must return to individual truthfulness. Reform our inner and outward love for propriety and God’s laws of right and wrong and accept personal responsibility! Each soul must value God’s word as the ultimate truth. “Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.”   Psalms 119:5-6

The verse above is a great link to what needs  to be said next.  Truth manages and connects human life.   (Get your mind around that.)  Some people dislike truth because it was given by God to help man to see beyond that untruth which confuses and separates him from the control of God (and society). While the minds of some men use rules of behavior and moral guidance to enjoy a good life and a wonderful life in heaven, other human beings wish to have a life of restraints and license to find the lives of decadence    Now here’s a little illustration of mine.  I have met a lot of men who have taken a chunk of their own money and purchased a Harley Davidson motor cycle. They may crank it up on the weekends and cycle to some place  where they play horse shoes and have a picnic, sleep in a motel and  recycle home the next afternoon. I have asked them why they do this, and they always say, “It makes me free!”  Oh?  So, 2,000 lbs of steel, wire, rubber, and plastic costing $16,000  requiring inspection and insurance, gas and oil,  sits in the garage 5 days a week makes you freeEXPLAIN THAT TO ME!   LET ME EXPLAIN THAT TO YOU! A pardon from the governor may make you free. A divorce decree may make you free. The Emancipation Proclamation may make you free….in your weak mind. You abandoned the truth long ago regarding your FREEDOM, misjudging the source and true meaning of freedom.  Only ONE THING will actually make you free…The sacrificial blood of Jesus on the cross will make you free!  ”  “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6;   Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world–to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”  John 18:37

There is a raging war now in our world. From our piece’s introduction above we realize it has been going on since the first humans were initiated into the world. Wars of every kind disturb the world from the hearts of men, to man’s highest travels. War propagates fear, hatred, danger, worry,  and on and on. The present wars crush many new troubles into our lives. And the ability to be secure in what we believe to be the truth rises and falls each day as many “news reports” are produced. What are we to believe? How can we be safe and secure? Who is truthful and who are the liars?  Men have pitted the media against all sides by failure to disclose all the truth while other write “fake news”?  Certainty is impossible. Peace is getting more fragile. What am I to believe?

Begin with faith that God is entirely in control. What He allows to occur fits His eternal plan. You may choose to disagree, but not to disobey. The powers of evil seem strong, but God has Satan thoroughly beaten. Trust God’s eternal truth for your welfare, temporal and eternal.  “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” John 17:17  Count on Jesus as having every vestige of truth: it is his nature and his tool  .  Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

This is a big subject, and, as you write, it’s getting harder nowadays to know who’s telling it.
