CHOOSING YOUR LIGHT

September 2, 2016

Text: “Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.  But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” I  John 2:10-11

The Bible is replete with figures of speech contrasting darkness and light. Nearly all of these devices use white to represent good and black to depict evil. Jesus identifies himself as light. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” John 9:5   Acts 26:18 poses Satan as the master of darkness, “to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”  As this text indicates, men who are in darkness (the control of Satan) must open their eyes to the light in order to recognize righteousness and learn that thy must escape darkness and follow the light to forge ahead to forgiveness by Christ.

This is basically the strategy of Satan, distracting sinners from realizing righteousness. Jesus warned of this evil ploy.  “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.” John 12:40

Inasmuch as Jesus is the light of the world  (John 9:5), his nature is to illuminate this world with his light and dispense that light to drive back the darkness of sin, thus exposing salvation to men.  Otherwise Satan’s thrall will take men captive and keep them “in the dark” of his kingdom. Jesus releases his light  to mankind in the truth of his gospel and has given us a command to overcome the darkness in men’s minds.

The symbolic linking of light and darkness is evident from before the creation of our earth. Notice that the condition of our universe was one one of total chaos and darkness.  And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Genesis 1:3  Darkness is a state of  chaos. God made the world to counteract the death that darkness imposes. The orderliness of light is the nemesis of the chaos of death over which Satan rules. The Devil is a crafty strategist who wishes to divert mankind from the kingdom of light and retain them in his devil’s hell. And one of Satan’s ploys is to suppress the word of God, the gospel, the truth.   “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” II Corinthians 4:4

Biblically, it may be said that the eye is a moral determiner. What the eye perceives and the brain embraces is involved in moral choices. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.” Luke 11:35b-36  You must obtain the Light of God’s Son and make sure that you absolutely live by it. Plus, you must use that godly light and evict from your soul the darkness which is chaotic and deadly. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.35 Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright,as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.” Luke 11:34-36

To live in light or darkness is your choice.  And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” John 3:18-21 Those who love evil had to choose to hate the light and what it stands for. Those who love righteousness must choose to hate sin. It is “either”/”or”  and you can’t choose to sit on the fence.

Maintenance is indispensable to sustain the light in your life.  This is evident  because Jesus said, “When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.” Your eye is a seeker and transmitter for light, as well as its regulator in the body. But it can deliver enough light or  insufficient light at your selection. When your body receives too little of its necessary nutrients it becomes sickly, and possibly dies. When light is diminished from the soul it withers and dies.  Obviously, this encourages us to keep focused on righteousness, but do not be distracted by what is in the darkness!

“Awake, O sleeper,
    and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”  Ephesians 5:14b
