PRAISING GOD

April 3, 2016

Text:  “I will extoll you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable…My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and forever.” Psalms 145:1-3, 21

The praise of God by mankind is universal, and resides innate within all to experience awe and praise the Maker of this world. “As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth…” Psalms 48:10a,b  Praise to God wells up from the heart and bursts forth in song, joy, exclamation, and exaltation. Man expresses his gladness, rejoicing, and thanksgiving to an all powerful and beneficent God. Indeed, it is our duty as well as privilege to engage in lauding our Maker. Praise on man’s part is not only our delight, it is our duty. Our praise to God is to be constant. “I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.” Psalms 146:2 The praise that can be offered to him is limitless.  “For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations…” Malachi 1:11

Here are some things that must be done in praise to our Lord God.

In our praise we must recognize  that we are worshiping God as God. You might deem that the former sentence is a slam dunk shot for everyone, but that is untrue. You must understand that persons use the word  “God” in different ways. For instance, when lots of people think of God they are really mistaking “mother nature” for deity. Others conceive of God as an overarching energy which shapes and energizes the world after its own workings. Atheists, for instance, consider that our world was created by random chance (the numbers just work out right).

But Christians must have their spirits focused upon the divine, all-knowing, omnipotent, Master whose spirit created this universe, maintains it, gave life and eternal souls to men, and sustains man and material creations. This is the God we praise as the only true God.  “For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me…” Isaiah 46:8bc

Our praise must express our proper recognition and reverent realization of God’s bountiful blessings. To be sure, God is the fountainhead of all man’s blessings. “Every good gift and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation of shadow due to change.” James 1:17 God has sufficiency and power to shower every blessing upon us. “And my God shall supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 Whether we have little or much we must express frequently our thanksgiving by praise to God! Not to praise God is to expose our ingratitude and inconsideration.

It is imperative that we recognize that God has, at a great price, established salvation for us. “…whom (Christ)  God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness. because in his divine forbearance had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.: Romans 3:24-26  “Our God is a God of salvation, and to the Lord, the Lord, belong deliverances from death.” Isaiah 68:20  Salvation! What a magnificent concept! Freedom from Satan’s tyranny! Freedom from sin’s control! Freedom from death! Freedom from guilt and condemnation! Glory to God for his grace and redemption! Give God praise!

There is another important way we can praise God.  We can praise him by living the way he has commanded us to live! Jesus demanded that Christians be the “light of the world”. “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 The apostle Paul conceived of the life of a Christian as an example for the world to behold a godly behavior that directs praise to our heavenly Father. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1 Thus you should live your life in such a way as to direct praise from all mankind to God.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
