Text:  “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.  When shall I come and appear before God?   My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all day long,  “Where is you God?”  Psalms 42: 1-3

There are many times in life when things need re-invigorating. Here in Texas we hope for rain to refill lakes and ponds for crops and livestock. Businesses might have a “lull” in profits; they need more customers. A few years ago the supply of gasoline ran prices to unprecedented highs: other prices rose because to this.  Electricity prices have multiplied for lack of production and caused “brown outs”. Folk suffer when circumstances make prices soar and overburden consumers.

Likewise, humans find their souls and spiritual energies in an arid condition from time to time. They struggle and seemingly cannot find rest, refreshment and renewal. Men, women, and children under such circumstances tire, lose enthusiasm, and get “down”. Yes, we all need rest and refreshment.

If we seek refreshment, from what source do we seek it? Some people have one source, others another. Some seek it from a whisky bottle, dope, or pills. These are ineffective in the long term, and inevitably fail.  Some think riches make happiness; but that is untrue. Some try self help books, but find only short term fixes. Wrong sources! Do not rely upon them. “‘…for my people have committed two evils, for they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:13

Seek true renewal from God, his word, and prayer. “Come, every one who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price…Incline your ear and come to me; hear, that your soul may live.” Isaiah 55:1, 3a,  God’s assistance is always available and his power to  help is unbounded.  His invitation for refreshment for our burdened souls stands unendingly. “…do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”  Philippians  4:6

Think of the refreshment that water gives to you: life, refreshment and health.  After laboring in the hot sun it can dispose of dirt and grime. You step out of the shower feeling renewed. Thirst is quelled by a tall glass of iced water. A wash cloth doused in cold water can bring your body temp down. We like to go to lakes for recreation and swimming. Jesus declared that he dispenses “living water” and informs that “The water that I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:10c and 14b

Nothing else will do when you soul is stagnant, arid, wearied, troubled, oppressed and/or depressed but water from the “river of life”Revelation 22: 1  God and his Son are the only source of this elixir of the soul. As above, Jesus spells out  that he is able to dispense that water. He and his Father are entreating you to use this resource for refreshing of the soul. They promise that they hold out to all their servants is that they present mankind with “the bread of life” (John 6:35) and the “water of life”.  (Revelation 21:6)

Eat and drink of these refreshments deeply and often.
