COUNTERFEIT PREACHERS

January 21, 2014

Text:  ‘I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.”  Acts 20:29-30

Preachers are visible persons. They are often judged by their appearances. If not by appearance, then personality. Friendliness and encouragement are two standards by which these men are perceived. Others are estimated by oratorical skills, some by academic. By whatever standard one judges, he either loves or hates the preacher.

On the other hand, people idolize some preachers. He is young, handsome, and dynamic. Some people believe that by being seen with him or by mentioning his name that they are esteemed by others. (The old “coat tails” approach.) Or the “wanna be” may be conceived as “holy” by association. Others in the church try to flatter and maneuver him to obtain their own ends.

Some preachers can lead saints astray with manipulation, other with charm, still others by twisting the Bible. Jesus said to beware false prophets who pose as good, but truly are evil. Matthew  7:15 Paul says that they are insincere, teaching regulations  about abstinence of things which God has blessed. I Timothy 4:1-4  He warned about those who are  insubordinate, empty talkers, and those who  are deceivers. Titus 1: 10  Peter warns about false teachers who secretly bring destructive heresies and deny the Master (Jesus) . II Peter 2:1  John calls those who deny Jesus as God’s Son “Antichrists”.   I John 2:22-23   Jude reveals some as “ungodly people”, who pervert the grace of God. Jude  4

These men are minions of Satan.  He stirs them up, using any means, good or evil.  Satan’s objective in this campaign is warning about their character. He says Satan is a devouring lion seeking prey (souls).  I Peter 5:5-10  Keep in mind that, so armed, Satan and his servants are formidable stalkers.

Peter gives us some defenses against this assault. See I Peter 5:8-10   First, humble yourself before God. That is, submit yourself to trust God totally. Second, unladen all your oppressions and worries on God.  He will deal with your burdens and comfort your heart.  Third, be soberminded, that is, think seriously  and practically. Fourth, be on watch: be alert, continue to protect your soul. Fifth, resist your enemy and all his cohorts.

How do we recognize those who subvert the word of God?  The enemy is apparent to all who are knowledgeable. Jesus insisted that it is apparent what thy are by what they produce. “You will recognize them by their fruits.” Matthew 7:16 , 20  Paul testified to the truth of Jesus’ declaration. “For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” Galatians 6:8  Peter is very candid about these counterfeit preachers. “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. , who will secretly bring in destructive heresies , even deny the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. ” II Peter 2:1

There is enough evidence here to identify the counterfeiters. Be on the lookout for these persons. Know their character, their methods, and their aims., Rebuke them. Refuse them. Do not defend or assist them. Have nothing to do with them. This is your duty.

“Beloved do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”  I John 4:1

Dear Readers,

About a year ago I began writing these blog articles. It was my intention to publish two articles per week in “The Mansion in Heaven”.  Due to other matters such as my health, I have decided I was taking on too much. Therefore, I am reducing my articles to one per week. The format may change a little, but the content will still be the word of God. I pray you to continue reading and I hope you will enjoy it and even learn something now and then.

Live always for the Lord.
